Ask Harvey

Dear Harvey,
My dog likes to chew my shoes and slippers. How do I stop him?

From,
Jason, age 16

MMMmmm, I love a good sneaker!  That’s a great question Jason.

I sometimes like to chew on a gloves or shoe, but I know I shouldn’t.  Here are some of the things my owner uses to encourage me to do the right thing:

1. Have several other good chew things available for your dog.  When you see us with a slipper, don't yell or call us “bad dog”, just trade us for toy or bone (put it right in his mouth).  When you take the slipper, say 'thank you!’ A bone probably tastes better anyway.  Your dog probably won't even realize that you're taking away the smelly shoe, because the toy is fun too. Don't punish your dog for chewing because it is natural for us to chew – it keeps our teeth clean.

2. Remember to help us be good pets.  Put all your shoes and slippers (and other tempting items) in a closed closet or a drawer. If there is no opportunity for us to get into trouble, then you’ll be happier. If you have a puppy, then you should also “puppy-proof” your house like you might for a toddler who wants to get into things.   We are curious and everything is a chew toy until we know better.

Hope that helps, I know it helped me!
