Dear Harvey,
Now that the weather is getting colder, should I avoid taking my dog outside as much?  Or should I put a sweater or coat on him?

Wooofff!

Let me first answer the part about putting a coat or sweater on your dog – It would depend on your dog and the breed, but I wouldn’t wear a girlie little sweater ever!  If I am not left outside for a long period of time on a cold day, I don’t need a coat to stay warm.  Sometimes, I don’t even notice that it is cold outside because I love to jump around and chase toys.

Please don’t stop taking your dog outside – we need fresh air and exercise, and the occasional bathroom break.  In average winter temperatures we enjoy being outdoors. We need to go for walks or play in wide open spaces to release some of our energy. Many dogs absolutely love to run and play in snow.

Huskies and other Artic breeds have coats designeDog Coatd for winter. Some sporting and herding breeds also have dense undercoats to keep them warm and dry.  Other dogs need extra protection from the cold though. Unless they have their own cozy fur coats, dogs living in winter climates need outerwear for warmth and comfort on cold windy days. Dogs who shiver on moderately cold fall days will need a warm sweater or coat and lots of encouragement to go outside in harsh winter weather, but it is really important for us to get outside as much as we might resist at first.  Some dogs love wearing coats and being dressed-up. For others, it's something they'll learn to tolerate (But not me, never!!!).

P.S. I included a picture of my friend Lucy – she loves her red sweater (I think she looks pretty cute in it, I must say)!
