Going Above & Beyond

Holiday Season Donations

This holiday season Karen Lackenbauer remembered the animals at the Centre.  Not sure of what supplies we needed she wrote the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society a helpful cheque of $100.00.  With the many different needs to be met everyday, a cash donation is always appreciated.  Thank you for remembering the animals that are less fortunate this holiday season!

On December 17th 2006 here at the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society we received a wonderful donation of $150.00.  The donation has made by Lynn Voelzing on behalf of the staff at the Intensive Care Unit and the Cardiology Unit at St. Mary’s Hospital.  What a wonderful gift to give to those you care about.  The staff and animals thank you!

St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs

St. Johns

St.John’s Ambulance Therapy Dogs held their annual food drive for the animals here at K-W Humane Society.  Harley, a visitation dog, presents the pets awaiting for adoption with a truck load full of kibble, toys and items from the wish list.  A special thank you to the group for remembering our feline friends with canned kitten food!  A big thank you to this group for their tremendous efforts!

Big thanks to Sobeys on Fischer-Hallman by Westmount for their generous donation!

Sobeys donated over 20 puppy starter kits to the K-W Humane Society on Wednesday November 29, 2006.  Each kit contained a big bag of Purina puppy food, coupons, a guide to raising a puppy, educational information & a Purina Frisbee, valued at $35.00 per kit!  We were running short on puppy food and your large donation has really helped our puppy food shortage!

Thanks for remembering us Sobeys!

Computer Doctor Food Drive

LogoOn Saturday, October 18, 2006, Chris and Bev Davis of The Computer Doctor held a food drive for the K-W Humane Society at the SuperPet on Fairway Road.  They advertised to friends, family and clients.  They created flyers, posters and notices for the shelves.  Their efforts were serious and as a result they were able to fill a van with all the items from our wish list.  These great individuals are not strangers to K-W Humane Society; last month they also fostered a family of kittens.

Pictured here are Bev and Chris with results of their efforts.THANK YOU for all your hard work and making our Wish List a little bit smaller this month.

Cleaning up for the K-W Humane!

Brianne Kelsey lost a contest, but the animals at K-W Humane won!  Brianne works at Virtual Causeway and when the cleaning staff took a 2-week holiday the company had a contest to see who could raise the most money for their favourite charity.  The loser of the contest had to clean the bathrooms!  I hear that the bathrooms at Virtual Causeway are sparkling clean this week thanks to Brianne.  Her charity, which was K-W Humane Society, still received $154.36.  Thanks Brianne for “Cleaning up” for the animals!

Annual Bichon Reunion

Once a year,  Mac and Donna Wile hold a Bichon reunion at their home. Every year they ask the attendees to bring a bag of dog food to be donated to the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society. On Saturday, September 10th, the date of this year's reunion, they collected over 350 pounds of food! We would like to thank the attendees for their generous contribution, and extend a special thanks to Mac and Donna for arranging this wonderful event!

Bob Nixon and The Elmira Golf & Country Club

On August 6, 2005 The Kitchener–Waterloo Humane Society (KWHS) received a badly injured cat that had been found at the Elmira Golf and Country Club.  Golfer Bob Nixon was teeing off from the 13th hole when he noticed a very thin cat with a severely mangled tail.  Knowing he could not leave the cat to suffer, he returned with a carrier and a can of food.  The 13th hole must have been that cat’s lucky number as Bob was able to capture him, and immediately brought him to the KWHS for medical attention.

Dr. Cheryl Yuill, DVM, examined the cat and advised that what was left of the tail would need to be removed, if the cat was to survive.  “The tail had broken off.  It looked like he had to pull it off to free himself.”  He had also lost a lot of skin off the remainder of the tail.  The surgery was determined to cost approximately $500.  Bob Nixon agreed to pay the bill.

Eldale came through the surgery well, but then had to battle an infection.  Dr. Yuill says the prognosis is good.  “He is recovering nicely.  He will only have a small piece of tail left, but the trauma hasn't affected his sweet disposition.”

Kitchener Fire Department

On March 5, 2005, our Humane Society participated in the dramatic rescue of a dog who had fallen through thin ice.  Nancy Shantz had been walking her dog along the banks of the Grand River and it had managed to make it on to the ice.

The dog was unable to make it back to shore, and the owner made a frantic call to the Humane Society on her cell phone. By-Law Officer Jason Rogers, was dispatched to assist in the Kitchener Fire Department with the rescue.

Firefighters Ed Oleaczek & Steve Mundy bravely ventured out on to the ice, and were able to bring the dog to safety. Officer Rogers examined the dog,  and other than being cold and frightened, it appeared to be OK. Jason instructed the owner to take it to her vet, where it later received a clean bill of health.

The Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society would like to Firefighters Ed Oleaczek & Steve Munday for going above and beyond in rescuing the unfortunate dog, reuniting it with its grateful owner.

St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs

We at the Humane Society, would like to thank the dogs of St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs for convincing their masters to do a food drive for the cats at our Centre. All the food that was collected by these  hard-working dogs, and their tireless masters, will help to provide the kittens and cats of our Centre with lip-smacking, nutritious food. This will help them stay healthy, and strong until they find a new, life-long home! Be sure to click on the image to see a larger picture of these great canines and their owners!

Wal*Mart Staff Christmas Wish

Staff members from the Ottawa Street Wal*Mart, in Kitchener, would like to wish their manager, Dorothy, a Merry Christmas. In recognition of her love of animals, her staff made a donation of dog food, treats and toys to the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society. Their generosity, on Dorothy's behalf, will help our Centre greatly and keep our Animals healthy and happy.
