Allie

HappyHello all,

I wanted to give you an update on "Sweetheart" who we adopted on Valentines day 2008!  She was the 7 month old tabby that everyone thought had such unusual markings.  I did some research and found out that she is a silver haired Torbie (Tortoise/Tabby) kinda rare!  We've renamed her Allie and from the minute we let her out of the box, she made herself right at home.

She's a sweet, lovable and playful cat who is very vocal and curious...we just love her personality.  At first we thought our other cat Tinker, a 13 year old Tabbie with strong maternal instincts might take to her right away, but right now they are just tolerating each other...I'm sure one day, I'll come home from work and find the two of them curled up together (I hope).  Allie darts for any door without thinking and I'm guessing that's how she became a stray in the first place. Allie is getting spoiled and that's just the way she likes it...she's got lots of toys, catnip, cat treats and kitten food and a whole house to romp around. Allie has quickly become one of the family and we look forward to her companionship for many, many years.  Thanks to all the staff who helped us find our new kitty to fill a big hole in our hearts when one of our cats passed away.

"Mikita" (aka McKita)

Sent February 15, 2008

HappyOur family stopped into the Centre between Christmas and New Year's after visiting a dog show at Bingeman's.  Mikita (a 6 year-old German Shepherd/Husky cross) immediately sparked the interest of our daughter.  Unfortunately, there were no dog adoptions at the time of our visit due to an outbreak of "kennel cough".  We came home and our daughter made a reminder note to call to check on Mikita in the new year.  We called back to find that the dogs were still in quarantine, but made a note to call back yet again.  In the meantime, our family looked at the option of possibly adopting or purchasing a puppy instead.  While still weighing our options, we called to find that the dog adoptions had just re-opened and immediately drove over to see Mikita once again.  We were able to accompany her on her walk and finally had the chance to "meet" her.  We submitted our application and took her home the next day, January 9th.  Mikita was very overweight and upon leaving the Centre, went immediately to a vet appointment where she tipped the scales at just under 105 lbs.  We were also told prior to her adoption and at the vet appointment that her teeth were plaque covered and her gums were irritated.  Today, Valentine's Day, and just over a month since joining our family, Mikita weighed in at 97 lbs and her dental health is greatly improved.  She is on a "light" dry food, gets a rawhide "chewie" daily and is walked 3-4 times a day.  She may have arthritis in her hips, but it is too soon to tell.  The condition may improve with additional weight loss.  We will continue to monitor her in this regards and treatment may be deemed necessary in the future.

Mikita has settled into her new home quite nicely, although she is still determined to give our cats a chase every now and then.  Thankfully, they are quicker and more agile than she is!

Pink Bunny

Sent February 11, 2008

HappyHello,

Remember me?  I am the big red-eyed white bunny that stayed with you since last November.  I went to live at my forever home just this past Saturday and I met my new family.  My human slave is pretty nice.  She pets me a lot, so I like her fine.  She is still trying to figure out how to pick me up comfortably (I had to scratch her a bit to try to show her how) but I know she'll catch on real soon!

I really like my new enclosure!  It has 3 levels!  I haven't yet decided to jump up on the top level, but I will soon.  For now, I really love to jump from the floor level to the middle level.  It's fun stuff.  I've already decided I was comfortable enough to flop in my litter box.  I can eat hay while laying on my side... a trick my human slave thinks is funny for some reason.

You know what?  There are 2 other bunnies living here!  One is smaller than me & her ears hang down and the other is really big (the human calls it a dog).  We have met briefly but my human slave thinks I should get used to living here for a while before we hang out.  She has also booked me an appointment to visit Dr. Buhrows this week for a check up.  I have heard Dr. Buhrows is a very nice vet and will make sure I stay nice & healthy!

I had my human slave attach some pictures of me in my new place for you to see.  Also, you can watch a video of me on youtube here.  Please say a special 'hi' to Amanda and Crystal L who helped hook me up with my human slave.  Thank you very much to everybody there at the K-W Humane Society for making my stay there very comfortable!!!

Bunny thumps & kisses,

HappyHello everybody!

As the anniversary of my adoption is here, I wanted mom McCormick to send you guys a quick email. I was the 3.5 month old shih pooh that was there a year ago.

My mom says there is only one word to describe me and that is "happy!". She says I am pure happiness. If I even think someone is looking at me, or going to look at me, I wag my tail. I love people and dogs. Everybody is my friend.

I'm enjoying my big dog sister Lexi. You'll remember her, the golden retriever. She likes to sleep a lot but when I think she's slept enough, I jump on her and say "Let's play!"

As my pictures will show you I have had a very busy and fun year.  The chihuahua is my grumpy cousin, Danny, but inspite of his grumpiness he really does like playing with me and I'm sure not afraid to put him in his place.  Another picture shows me and my new best friend digging away in the sand that was dug up by a big machine at the cottage.  The other picture shows me and Lexi on our boat. I love going for rides but when the boat goes faster, I prefer to sit in my mom's lap because it's warmer there. I'm usually wet from swimming before we go in the boat so she wraps me in a towel and holds me if I'm shivering. But as soon as the boat slows down, I'm right up there with Lexi because I don't want to miss anything!

My big sister Elysse wanted mom to bring me back to the Humane Society to say hello to everybody and show you how much I've grown, but mom McCormick is afraid it might bring back memories of abandonment and doesn't want to scare me. So maybe we'll give mom some more time to decide.

But mom says to tell you I am healthy and very happy. I have stopped my submissive urinating, hooray! I think I was just scared but mom never scolded me when I did that and only loved me, so now I am grown up (15 lbs! but certainly not overweight) and happy to greet everybody without feeling the need to pee. I save that for outside.

So, please give a big shout-out to all the staff and all the animals there. Give them my love and tell them a great home is just around the corner!

Hugs and Kisses
Love
Molly McCormick

Teddy

HappyHello KW Humane Society Staff :)

I hate to say it but it has been 5 years since we adopted our Chow, Ted, from your facility and yesterday was the first time I visited your website.  I was quite impressed with the resources, stories, and pictures that I found while browsing.  One of the first things that jumped out at me was your 'Happy Tails' section;  what a great idea!

We adopted a Chow Chow from you 5 years ago in May.  The name you had given her was 'Nina' as she was a puppy mill rescue and had not had a name for the first 6-7 years of her life.  We are unsure of her exact age because she was brought in from a raid and your staff had to estimate her age by her teeth. Since she was not accustomed to the name you gave her, or to the English language in general since she was never really spoken to, we decided to call her 'Ted' because she looks just like a big red teddy bear.  Ted was extremely malnourished, abused, shaved bald and unable to digest her own dog food when we took her in.  It was a fight that I thankfully won as my boyfriend did not think that she was a good choice because of her health and the fact that she was older, but in the three times we visited, she was the only one I wanted.

At the time, the staff weren't sure if she would live much longer as she had been there for 4 months and could not seem to keep anything down.  However, after a few weeks she was eating normally and throwing up less, and after a few months she was starting to put on weight and her coat started to grow back in.   Ted is now roughly 11 and she is not only happy, but very healthy.  She is spoilled rotten and exploits that fact everyday.  I just can't help but think that if we hadn't come along, Ted wouldn't be here today and I couldn't imagine a world without her.

I have attached a couple of pictures so you can see for yourself how happy she is and further, how far she has come.  Also, I want to say 'thank you' for not only rescuing her but for taking care of her for the four months that she was with you.  A lot of older dogs probably don't get adopted and they may be the ones that need it the most;  they have been abused for the longest and deserve to enjoy their remaining years but most don't get that opportunity.  The first half of Ted's life almost killed which is why I am so happy to tell you that the second half is better than she ever could have imagined.

Thanks again and I know we will be back in the future when we are looking to rescue again.

Sincerely, Tara, Jacob, Teddy

Underdog

Sent January 28, 2008

HappyHi, there!

You may remember me as Charger.  That was my name before I was adopted from the Centre in June of 2007.  My new family calls me Underdog, which they thought was a good name for a basset hound like me.  My new family includes another dog and a cat, but I'm the only one they trust to drive the boat when we go to the cottage, so I think they should call me Overdog.  Or maybe Overboard, which is sometimes where I end up.

Anyway, my family and I just wanted to say hi, and to say thanks for taking such good care of me during the month I stayed with you and for bringing us all together.

Puddin'

Sent January 24, 2008

HappyI adopted Puddin' a couple of years ago.  I was at your website this week and saw the "Happy Tails".  I thought Puddin's previous family might want to know what became of her, although it has been a while since allergies forced them to give her up.  As you can see, she's happy and comfortable, enjoying the warmth of my TV.

Thanks,

Halen

Sent January 13, 2008

HappyHi there,

We adopted our dog, Halen (previously known as "Ellie") on November 25th after seeing her on your website.  We couldn't have asked for a better match for our family.  Halen now enjoys her  long walks every night, and absolutely loves staring out our back sliding glass doors, watching for that pesky possum living under our neighbours deck.  She loves having company over to visit, because she knows that means even more attention and hugs.  She is an extremely intelligent dog, who likes to be challenged, and is therefore starting her obedience classes on Tuesday, with the hopes of eventually becoming a healing dog!  So here are some pictures of Halen in her new home!

Thank you so much for all that you do!

Diesel and Muffin

Sent December 9, 2007

HappyHi,

We adopted two kittens from you a few months back, both raised by your team since they were found as strays, and just wanted to give an update. We first adopted Diesel (was ‘Fudge’) and he was so cuddly and cute and always had to be with us. We decided to get him a friend so we adopted Muffin (was ‘Betty’). She is so cuddly and sweet too. We love them both so much and can’t imagine what we were doing without them. They love each other too. They are constantly together playing, eating, and snuggling together. Thank you for raising such adorable friendly kittens.

Thank you!

Katie (aka Sydney)

Sent December 26, 2007

HappyKatie wanted to wish everyone at the Centre a Merry Christmas!

We came to the Centre back in October of 2007.  We first saw Katie (aka Sydney) on the web site and just fell in love with her. So we made the trip from Toronto to visit her. We brought our other Aussie, Jasper with us. He instantly took to her. It was a great match! Home she would come with us.

After having Katie in the car for a bit we realized that she was very afraid of the car, truck or anything else that she needed to ride in. After 3 weeks of continues rides she has adjusted very well to the car. Not so much with the truck as of yet though, but we are working on it!

I have never seen a dog love to give hugs and kisses as much as Katie does. She is always willing to  wrap her paws around you and give you a big slurp. She gets lots of love here, from us, Jasper our other Aussie, and even the cat Raymond. Jasper and Katie love to go to the park to play. We should of named Katie "Tigger" as she is always bouncing around! It is quite funny to see.

Katie loves to talk to you. She tries so hard to speak to you so that you will understand her. If she cant get your attention she will nudge you and bob her head as to say " Come on" .

We are all very happy that Katie was able to join our family.

Simon (formerly Brady)

Sent November 27, 2007

HappyHi there!

I adopted Simon (formerly Brady) from the humane society about 3 weeks ago. Simon is a lionhead bunny, now aged 6 months old. He was brought to the Centre with his brother Flynn, who I see has also been adopted, which is good news!

Simon has many toys (and really likes to chew his wooden blocks and apple tree sticks!) and a whole room to run around in. He isn't too fond of being picked up yet, but loves his ears being pet, and loves to climb on people and sniff and give me licks. Simon loves grapes, apple slices, and papaya chunks for treats and he eats one papaya enzyme vitamin a day so he doesn't get hairballs (as rabbits cannot throw up their hairballs!)

Simon is totally litter trained now, and loves eating a variety of veggies; including green peppers, broccoli stems, and carrots!  Simon had a vet check up and is in perfect health, although the vet said he was a bit underweight at 3lbs. I'm sure he's gaining a lot now through his daily exercising and veggie eating!

I adopted Simon so quick (the same day I met him!) and the staff was so kind and helpful.  Often people overlook small animals to adopt, but they are a great alternative to a dog or cat, as they require less care, are clean and can be litter trained so easily.  Rabbits are also a lot quieter!

I'm happy I was able to give Simon a great home.

Thanks to all the staff and keep up your amazing work.

Pumpkin (formerly known as "Flynn")

Sent November 15, 2007

HappyHello KW Humane Society!

On Wednesday November 7th, I came to your Centre with the intention of adopting a kitten. However, I walked by this middle-aged lad, snoozing away with his paws folded in. Flynn was a stray apparently, and he had been at the Centre for four weeks. To be at the Centre for that long! - how he must be yearning for a home of his own while all the kittens got adopted! He was about 5 years old, which in human years, is close to 40! I looked at him and I just melted. At that moment, all I wanted to do was to give this older cat a chance to relax and hang out in a warm place without any worries of trying to find his way home or trying to find dinner that evening.

Suffice to say, Pumpkin (which is Flynn's new name) is thoroughly enjoying his new home (indoors, of course). He spends the majority of his day relaxing and lounging around without a care in the world. He loves to play with his catnip toys at night. He loves his new food, and I have to work on putting a teeny bit more of weight on him, but given how much he enjoys eating his gourmet chicken + lobster meals, I don't think that will be very difficult! Pumpkin is very affectionate, and he is one of the calmest cats I have ever met! I suppose, in part, that his placid and docile character is due to the fact that he is an older cat.

Pumpkin is fantastic with my 6 pound rabbit, Dutchie. Pumpkin tolerates/ignores the presence of Dutchie, which is great, considering that the normal role in the wild is that the cat would prey on the rabbit, and I would never want Dutchie to be harassed! Both Pumpkin and Dutchie are roomates, and they are living together in harmony. How sweet! Pumpkin is also very responsive to human cues, and as such, it has been smooth sailing in training Pumpkin out of certain habits and into others.

Thanks for all the work you do in saving the animals!

Cheers,
Anita

Tycho and Chloe

Sent November 15, 2007

HappyHi Everyone!

I was in there recently looking for a new addition to our clan at home.  This time we are looking for a kitten to adopt.  I had adopted 2 collie pups 7 years ago.  One was a blue merle, and the other was a tan coloured female.  It was assumed they were brother and sister because they had been found together.   We were so fortunate to be able to adopt them.  They are such a pleasure to have around.  They are inseparable and just want to be in the centre of everything!

Three years ago Tycho (the blue merle) was diagnosed with diabetes.  He is doing really well, and is a real trooper when it comes time to get his needles.  Chloe (tan) was there for full support, she is on the same food as Tycho, and she insists on having her "fake" needle when he has his!  It is quite a sight to see.

It brought back a lot of memories while I was wandering around the Centre, but mostly how appreciative I am for the services that you do!!  Thank you again, and I will be back in again shortly for a new family member.

Sincerely,
Karen Fitzpatrick

Pumpkin and Feist

Sent November 11, 2007

HappyHello!  This is the Walker family... I just wanted to send you an update on the two kittens we adopted about 2.5 weeks ago.  'Caramel' who we renamed Pumpkin, and her sister Feist.  They are super cute and happy kittens who are getting tons of love and affection.  We can't get enough of their totally cute behaviour and we are surprised at how well behaved they have been so far.  They are growing like crazy since they left you guys, and have really healthy appetites.  I have attached some pics of them!!!!

Harley (Bear)

Sent October 18, 2007

HappyHello KW Humane Society!

I just wanted to drop you a line to let you know that my recent adoption of a male kitten "Bear" from your facility has worked out great for everyone!

Bear's new name is 'Harley', and he is the happiest kitty on earth.  He's already spoiled rotten after only 1 week.  He loves his new home, and is a very happy kitten.... and gets all the love and attention he needs as a kitten (even more than what he wants at times too).

I'm very glad Harley and I found each other.  He's brought so much joy and laughter into my world.

Thank YOU, and keep up the great work you all do.

Daisy

Sent October 15, 2007

HappyGood morning.

I just wanted to follow up and give the staff at KW Humane Society an update on Daisy. I adopted Daisy on Saturday afternoon and was expecting a wild night getting her used to her new surroundings. I experienced the contrary. Other than the (expected) odd accident on the floor Daisy is the picture of a perfectly well behaved pup that is very adaptable to almost any situation. She met her new best friend Bindi the Boxer and after a few snarls and nips they were chasing each other around tails wagging (or in Bindi’s case, entire back end wagging) and then passed out together on the floor. She’s met the rest of the family as well and had a great time sniffing around my parents back yard and neighborhood.

I have begun getting her into a routine of feeding and walks and she seems to be responding well. I have attached a few pictures of her in her new home for all of you to take a look at.

Cheers
Nate Bean
