Volunteer Week

Throughout the Christmas season KWHS was at many Santa Pet Photos.  We would like to thank our many volunteers who acted as photographer, elf, and even helped out as Santa (the big guy was really busy this season).  Thank you for making Christmas Merry for all of our furry, feathered and leather-y friends!  Here are some of the great photos from these events…

I'm writing about Trooper, the amazing big black lab we all got to know & love at the Centre.   Trooper was the most gentle, loving,& beautiful dog.  He was our "gentle giant" & he loved attention.

His favorite place was sitting outside on the grass when it was sunny out.  He was content just sitting there. And the times when it was raining out, I would go in after work and just sit for a few hours with him on his comfy Humane Society bed.  He just lapped up the attention!  I can't count how many hours I just sat with him with his big slobbery head on my lap! Like all dogs he truly asked so little out of anyone.

Unfortunately, after many vet tests it was determined that he was very sick and was not going to make it. It was hard to let him go, as it only took a short while for staff & volunteers to fall in love with him.

It's times like this that I am very proud to be a volunteer with the Centre.  I am proud of all the love & care everyone was able to give him in his final days.

In addition, Trooper's foster family should be thanked.  Without them, and foster families like theirs in our community, we wouldn't be able to give the one-on-one care that some animals need to have.  Thank you - you truly make a difference.

Even though we all hoped for a happier ending, I am convinced that right now Trooper is running in a huge field, on the sunniest of days without any pain.  And that's all we can ask for.

We miss you Trooper!

On September 17 and 24th the KWHS Volunteers were invited to join staff on a special behind-the-scenes trip to the zoo.  The trip included a guided tour, a visit to the nutrition centre and an animal encounter.  Here are the photos:
