We lost our first cat BJ to cancer in October 2007 and thought we should get a companion for our other cat Kato. When we first got Isis, we didn't think we would bond that well with her because she was older and we only waited a month after BJ died. But she needed a home, as her previous owners had allergies, so we offered that to her. She didn't get along with Kato, but when he died in May 2008, she became our cat, our Queen, and we were able to shower her with affection.
When her previous owner got Isis in the fall of 1996 from the Toronto Humane Society, she was a year and a half old and had a kitten about 8 months old, named Galahad. He was also a beautiful little soul. He succumbed to cancer at 3.5 years. At that time, she was a skinny, tiny, timid little thing, and spent the first couple of weeks hiding. She was always the Grand Dame of their household; when they got other cats, they all deferred to her - she was the boss. She also loved to "talk" and lay on her side on the floor while getting a belly rub.
After some routine dental surgery, we learned that Isis had bone cancer and we had to make another difficult decision, the third in 2.5 years. Isis was much loved by two different households so she was a very lucky lady. But she was a wonderful soul like BJ and Kato and fully deserved our companionship. We will always miss her spirit, but have many memories in the short time she was with us. Until we meet again our furry angels.

On December 17th, 2000, Smokey, a 7 year old grey and white DSH cat came into my life and over the next 10 years what developed was an amazing bond of friendship and unconditional love. Smokey was not 'just a cat' to me; she was my best friend. She brought so much joy to my life and I will always be grateful that our paths crossed that day in December for I believe that everything happens for a reason and we were destined to meet. It was the best decision I ever made for she changed my life forever.
A year ago this March, Smokey was diagnosed with kidney disease. Unfortunately, this past Christmas, her health started to decline and on Monday February 8th, 2010 I made the heart wrenching decision to say good-bye to my friend. I did not want her to suffer any longer and I do believe that she is in a better place and that I will see her again. I remember all of the wonderful memories she has given me over the past 10 years and know that she will always live on in my heart.
Good-bye my dear friend, until we meet again.

I was fortunate to have Jake in my life for the past ten years. I adopted from the Kitchener Humane Society after he was spotted wandering the streets of New Hamburg. He was my terrible little Terrier. At first Jake had no social skills and was shy around others dogs and people. It was like he had never seen a park before. Let alone a park full of dogs playing with each other. Jake was allot to handle. He had bitten me and the vet, but over time and lots of training and patience he was my best friend. Jake had a tumor in his nasal passage which he bore with great courage. But this December he stopped eating and couldn't walk very far. So on December the 8th I let him go. He may be on probation in heaven but I'll know he'll pass with flying colours.

It is truly difficult to sum up the last 11 years with Scarlet because I think that the impact of these years can’t be put into words. My husband selected Scarlet from the K-W Humane Society when she was 2 years old (approx). He walked up and down peering into the kennels: Scarlet was the only dog who was relaxed, looking almost bored, at the back of her kennel. He took her outside, and immediately she cleverly started playing ‘keep away’ with a ball. This was the dog for us.
My fondest memories of Scarlet:
- she was in heaven when we would take her back country camping where she would run though the woods for hours and then, exhausted, sleep like a baby in the tent. She always had to be in the canoe at the front of the group or she would be upset
- whenever we moved, she would adapt very well, so long ass he established her routine: sleeping spaces, places where she could gaze out the window, times/places for walks, etc. She would always roll in the grass at the EXACT same spot in the walk, every day.
- she built relationships with her toys, carrying them around carefully in her mouth, taking them on walks (how funny is it to see a dog with a stuffed sheep upside-down in her mouth?) until the relationship randomly dissolved overnight and she would destroy the toy (bits of stuffed sheep all over the house!)
- Saturday and Sunday morning family snuggles on the bed
- whenever she began to eat her food, she would always pick out one piece of kibble then spit it out…then another, then another. After two or three tastes, she would chow down.
- she would look you right in the eyes, and her eyes were the exact same as my husband’s – in many ways they were so similar
- she loved soft things and would gently poke at them with her cute nose
- she would bite snowballs and chew apart snowmen
- she didn’t like to go down slides
- she would sit in the backseat of the car and look out the window calmly – which made everyone laugh who would pull up beside our car. She would also sit between the two front seats so that she could be part of things
- she was such a smart dog…she seemed to understand humour, expression, complicated games, and her mannerisms were human
- she would smell a flower, then bite it
- she would patrol the backyard, keeping the squirrels inline
- she would lie out in the sun all day, if possible
- she would jam her snout between your knees when you walked in the door in order to get pet
- she really only loved a few people, and couldn’t be bothered with anyone else. but those she did love, she loved very deeply: Kevin, Adele, Heidi, Emma, Kirsten, Nathan, Melanie, Peter, Kim, Ann and a few people from university – these were really the only people she could be trusted around
I will miss Scarlet every day, but I am fortunate to have hundreds of photos of her, that show all aspects of her personality. She was a member of the family and her place in our hearts will always remain.

He was a Small Dog with a Big Heart!
We often receive heart warming stories about pets we adopted out and about pets in our community. This is a lovely little tale about Cheech:
About 11-years ago a little dog named Mickey was about to find a new permanent home. His current family could no longer care for him so they put an ad in the local paper. Ken and Sheila saw the ad and felt connected to the little dog and decided they had to meet. They made an appointment and went out in a heavy rainstorm to meet little Mickey. As they arrived at the apartment they ran to get out of the rain, and again they had a good feeling about meeting this new little dog. They found the apartment and knocked on the door. As the door opened so did their hearts, right there at their feet was Mickey, a very excited, brown Chihuahua! It was love at first sight for all of them! They took one look at Mickey, and knew they wanted to take him home. They also thought his name didn’t suit him, so right then and there they decided to change his name to Cheech! Cheech’s previous owner then informed them that ‘Cheech’ had been his name before they became his owner, this was surely meant to be.
As the years passed on, Cheech was the most friendly, cuddly, well behaved little buddy you could ever wish for. He always lived life to the fullest! He loved to go boating, flying, and for motorcycle rides – he even had his own helmet! Cheech went everywhere with is new owners; garage sales, shopping, or just to visit friends.
He was welcomed everywhere.
While Ken and Shelia were on a short vacation, sadly, Cheech passed away. They were shocked to hear the sad news and took comfort in looking at old pictures of Cheech. It wasn’t until after his passing, in pictures, that they noticed a very unique fur pattern on Cheech’s little forehead. It was a heart. They had never noticed this before but it confirmed what they always knew: Cheech was a small dog with a big heart. They will always remember him just that way.
Since Cheech’s passing, his owners have made a generous donation to the Centre and hope that the animals here make other people as happy as Cheech made them. |
