RIMdonateThe holidays at the Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society wouldn’t have been the same without Ryan, Senior Director of Blackberry Operations at RIM.  Every year Ryan organizes a Christmas charity drive within his department, and luckily for us we were the recipient of his goodwill!  Ryan is in charge of over 200 employees, he put them to work raising money for the animals at the Centre.  Vendors donated items for a silent auction and employees bid on them!  Not only that, many people gave cash donations or supplies that we always need.  Ryan brought in a full car load of supplies: shavings for rabbit cages, dog and cat food, treats, toys, medical supplies, cleaning products, and so much more!  After putting all the wonderful items under our Christmas Wish Tree, he still had more to give!  Ryan pulled out a large cash donation of $2,195! Wow!

Thank you Ryan for organizing this charity drive and thank you to all the employees of Blackberry Operations for your generosity!

On March 5, 2005, our Humane Society participated in the dramatic rescue of a dog who had fallen through thin ice.  Nancy Shantz had been walking her dog along the banks of the Grand River and it had managed to make it on to the ice.

The dog was unable to make it back to shore, and the owner made a frantic call to the Humane Society on her cell phone. By-Law Officer Jason Rogers, was dispatched to assist in the Kitchener Fire Department with the rescue.

Firefighters Ed Oleaczek & Steve Mundy bravely ventured out on to the ice, and were able to bring the dog to safety. Officer Rogers examined the dog,  and other than being cold and frightened, it appeared to be OK. Jason instructed the owner to take it to her vet, where it later received a clean bill of health.

The Kitchener-Waterloo Humane Society would like to Firefighters Ed Oleaczek & Steve Munday for going above and beyond in rescuing the unfortunate dog, reuniting it with its grateful owner.

Bob Nixon and The Elmira Golf & Country Club PDF Print E-mail

On August 6, 2005 The Kitchener–Waterloo Humane Society (KWHS) received a badly injured cat that had been found at the Elmira Golf and Country Club. Golfer Bob Nixon was teeing off from the 13th hole when he noticed a very thin cat with a severely mangled tail. Knowing he could not leave the cat to suffer, he returned with a carrier and a can of food. The 13th hole must have been that cat’s lucky number as Bob was able to capture him, and immediately brought him to the KWHS for medical attention. Dr. Cheryl Yuill, DVM, examined the cat and advised that what was left of the tail would need to be removed, if the cat was to survive. “The tail had broken off. It looked like he had to pull it off to free himself.” He had also lost a lot of skin off the remainder of the tail. The surgery was determined to cost approximately $500. Bob Nixon agreed to pay the bill. Eldale came through the surgery well, but then had to battle an infection. Dr. Yuill says the prognosis is good. “He is recovering nicely. He will only have a small piece of tail left, but the trauma hasn't affected his sweet disposition.”
